How to convert BMP to PNG online

Drop one or more BMP files onto the box above. Each file is decoded and re-encoded as a PNG in your browser using the Canvas API. The output keeps every pixel exactly — only the container format and compression change — so the visual result is identical to the source BMP. Use Download or Download all to save the PNGs.

Why convert BMP to PNG?

BMP is an old uncompressed format. A modest 1920 × 1080 BMP weighs around 6 MB; the same image saved as PNG is usually 500 KB to 1.5 MB depending on content. PNG is also supported everywhere — websites, email clients, modern OSes, and chat apps — where BMP is increasingly rejected or rendered awkwardly.

What you can do

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert BMP to PNG online for free?

Drop one or more BMP files onto the box above. Each is converted to a PNG in your browser and listed with a Download button. No account, no upload, no watermark.

Does ToolChop upload my BMP files?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device — there is no upload, no temporary storage, and no copy on our servers.

Why convert BMP to PNG?

BMP is an old uncompressed format — files are usually 5–20× larger than the same image saved as PNG. PNG is lossless like BMP but compresses far more efficiently and is supported everywhere on the web, in email, and in modern operating systems. PNG also supports transparency, which BMP usually does not.

Is the conversion lossless?

Yes. Both BMP and PNG store every pixel exactly. The PNG output has identical visual content to the BMP input — nothing is averaged, blurred, or thrown away. Only the file format and compression change.

Will the PNG file be smaller than the BMP?

Almost always — typical savings are 60–95%. The exact ratio depends on content: photos compress less than diagrams; high-color images compress less than icon-style art. A 10 MB BMP often ends up under 1 MB as a PNG.

What BMP variants are supported?

Modern browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) decode the standard 24-bit and 32-bit BMP variants natively. Less common variants — RLE-encoded 8-bit, OS/2 BMP, or DIB-only headers — may fail to load. If you see a decode error, open the BMP in a viewer first and re-save it as a standard 24-bit BMP.

Can I convert multiple BMP files at once?

Yes. Drop multiple files into the upload area or pick several from the file dialog. Each is converted in parallel and listed with its own Download button. A Download all button appears when you have more than one result.

Is there a file size limit?

Only your browser's memory. We have converted 100 MB BMPs in modern Chrome without issue. Very large files (50+ MP) may take a few seconds to decode because BMP is uncompressed and the entire pixel buffer is loaded into RAM.

Does the output PNG keep transparency?

If the source BMP is a 32-bit ARGB bitmap with an alpha channel, transparency is preserved. Standard 24-bit BMPs have no alpha channel — the output PNG will be fully opaque. If you need transparency you do not have, use our PNG Maker which has a transparent-background option.

How does BMP to PNG differ from BMP to JPG?

PNG is lossless — perfect for screenshots, line art, logos, and diagrams where every edge should stay sharp. JPG is lossy — better for photos, where smaller files matter more than perfect edges. For most BMPs (especially screenshots and clip art), PNG is the right choice. Use BMP to JPG only when the BMP is a photo and you need it small.

Why use ToolChop instead of an installed converter?

No install, no signup, and your files never leave the browser. ToolChop is the same workflow as Photoshop's File → Save As (PNG) — just opened in any browser, on any device, in one click.

Can I convert BMP to PNG on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works in iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and other mobile browsers. Tap to pick BMP files from Files, iCloud Drive, or Google Drive.

Why is my BMP not decoding?

Most decode failures come from old or non-standard BMP variants. Open the BMP in Preview (macOS), Photos (Windows), or GIMP, and Save As / Export As BMP to produce a standard 24-bit BMP. Then try the conversion again. If it still fails, the file may be corrupted.
