How collage building works

ToolChop renders a single output canvas at your chosen dimensions with cells laid out in the selected grid pattern. Each cell receives the next image in your order list, fit using either Cover (crop to fill) or Contain (shrink to fit) sizing. Gap, corner radius, and background color all apply globally. The result is exported as JPG (92%) or PNG (lossless).

Why a local collage maker matters

Photo collages are almost always built from personal photos — family events, weddings, trips, memorials. Uploading dozens of personal photos to a third-party collage site just to grid them is a needless data path. Many free collage sites also add watermarks or push paid accounts. ToolChop keeps everything local, never watermarks, never asks for a sign-in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a photo collage online for free?

Pick a grid layout (2×2, 3×3, 4×4, strips, etc.), drop your photos onto the dropzone, and adjust spacing, corner radius, and background color. The preview updates live. Click Download to save as JPG or PNG. No account, no upload, no watermark, no daily limit.

Does ToolChop upload my photos?

No. All photos are loaded into a canvas in your browser and composited locally. None of them leave your device. Collages are often built from personal photos (family events, trips, memorial slideshows), so the privacy story is important.

Why is the privacy story relevant for a collage tool?

Collages are almost always built from personal photos: weddings, birthdays, family events, memorials, trip recaps. Uploading dozens of personal photos to a third-party collage site just to grid them is a needless data path — and many free collage sites also add watermarks or upsell premium accounts. ToolChop keeps everything local and never watermarks.

How many photos can I add?

Up to the number of cells in your chosen layout (4 for 2×2, 9 for 3×3, 16 for 4×4). Cells that aren't filled show a placeholder. You can drop more photos than cells — extras stay in the order list and become active when you switch to a larger layout.

What layouts are available?

Nine grid layouts: 2×1 (side by side), 1×2 (stacked), 2×2, 1×3 (vertical strip), 3×1 (horizontal strip), 2×3, 3×2, 3×3, 4×4. Each gives equal-sized cells. For non-grid layouts (mosaic, Pinterest-style), use a dedicated tool — this one is focused on clean grid collages.

Does the collage have a watermark?

No. The downloaded image contains only your photos and the styling you chose. ToolChop never adds a 'made with' badge, logo, or any other marker.

What's the difference between Cover and Contain fit?

Cover crops each photo to fill its cell completely — no empty space, but parts of the photo are cropped. Contain shrinks each photo to fit inside its cell while preserving the full image — empty space appears as the background color. Cover is best for matching photos; Contain is best for photos of very different aspect ratios.

How do I reorder photos?

Use the up/down arrows next to each photo in the order list below the dropzone. The order is reflected in the cells: photo 1 → top-left, photo 2 → next cell, and so on, row by row.

What output size should I use?

For Instagram square: 1080×1080. For Pinterest portrait: 1000×1500. For Facebook cover: 1640×856. For print at 300 DPI 8×10: 2400×3000. The defaults (1600×1600) work well for general web sharing.

Can I add text to the collage?

Not on this page directly — but after downloading the collage, drop it into the Add Text to Image tool to add titles, captions, dates, or watermarks. Both tools run locally so the chain stays private.

Can I use this on my phone?

Yes. ToolChop works in mobile Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. Tap the dropzone to open the photo picker, multi-select, and the layout fills automatically. The download triggers your phone's native save/share sheet.

Why use ToolChop instead of Canva, BeFunky, or PhotoCollage.com?

Three reasons. First, no account or sign-in. Second, no upload — your photos stay on your device. Third, no watermark on the output. Canva is excellent for elaborate designs but overkill for a simple grid collage; ToolChop is fastest when you just need to grid 4–16 photos and download.
