Converting JPG to PNG is mostly about stopping further quality loss. JPEG is lossy: every time you save or re-save a JPG, it goes through another round of compression, and the artefacts accumulate. Open a JPG in Photoshop, save it, open it again, save it again — within a handful of round-trips, sharp edges start to blur and flat colours start to band. PNG is lossless: once your image is in PNG format, you can edit and save it as many times as you want without introducing any new compression artefacts.

The other common reason to convert is transparency. PNG supports an alpha channel; JPG doesn't. If you're prepping a JPG for cutout or transparent overlay work — turning a product photo into a logo, building a sticker for a design — converting to PNG is the first step before you erase the background. (Note: converting JPG to PNG doesn't add transparency on its own; it just makes transparency possible after subsequent edits.)

What it does not do: PNG cannot recover quality JPEG already discarded. The compression artefacts in the source JPG are baked into the pixels and will be preserved exactly in the PNG output. If you want a higher-quality version, you need to start from the original RAW or PNG, not from the compressed JPG. Conversion runs through the Canvas API entirely in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a JPG file to PNG?

Drag your JPG onto the tool above and click Download. The file converts to PNG in under a second. If you need to convert many JPG files, drop them all at once for batch conversion.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No — converting JPG to PNG doesn't recover quality that JPEG compression already removed. What it does do is stop any further quality loss: once in PNG format, you can edit and re-save the file repeatedly without introducing new JPEG artifacts.

Why would I convert JPG to PNG?

PNG is ideal when you need: transparent backgrounds (for logos or icons), lossless editing without re-compression artifacts, or screenshots and graphics with sharp text and edges. PNG files are larger than JPG but never lose quality when re-saved.

Can I convert JPG to PNG on iPhone?

Yes — open toolchop.com/convert-jpg-to-png in Safari on your iPhone. Tap the upload area to select a photo from your Camera Roll, then tap Download to save the PNG to your device.

Can I convert JPG to PNG on Mac without software?

Yes — use this tool in any browser. Alternatively, open the JPG in Preview → File → Export → choose PNG → Save. Both take under 10 seconds.

What is the difference between JPG and PNG?

JPG uses lossy compression (smaller files, slight quality reduction on each save). PNG uses lossless compression (larger files, no quality loss, supports transparency). Use JPG for photographs; use PNG for logos, icons, screenshots, and graphics.

Is there a file size limit for JPG to PNG conversion?

No limit — conversion runs in your browser. Large files (20MB+) may take a few seconds on slower devices but will complete without issues.
