Extract page ranges or split into every single page

How to split a PDF online

Drop a PDF into the box above. The page count loads instantly. Type page ranges in the format 1-3, 5, 8-12 — each comma-separated range becomes its own PDF. Or switch to Every page → 1 PDF to extract every page individually. Click Split PDF and grab the results.

Why split in the browser?

Most online PDF splitters upload your file to a server, process it there, and send the results back. That is fine for marketing PDFs, but a poor fit for contracts, payslips, medical records, or anything you would not want copied onto an unknown machine. ToolChop runs the split locally — your PDF never leaves your device.

What you can do

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF online for free?

Drop a PDF into the box above. Enter page ranges (e.g. 1-3, 5, 8-12) or switch to single-page mode to split every page into its own file. Click Split and download. No account, no upload, no watermark.

Does ToolChop upload my PDF to a server?

No. The split runs entirely in your browser using the pdf-lib library. Your PDF never leaves your device — there is no upload, no temporary storage, and no copy on our servers.

What page-range syntax does the tool accept?

Comma-separated. Use a single number (e.g. 5) to extract one page, or a hyphenated range (e.g. 1-3 or 10-20) for a span. You can mix and match: "1-3, 7, 10-12" produces three PDFs. Whitespace is ignored.

Can I extract a single page from a PDF?

Yes. Either type the page number on its own (e.g. "5") in the ranges field, or switch to single-page mode to extract every page individually. The resulting PDF is identical to the source page — text, links, and images preserved.

How many PDFs can I produce in one split?

There is no hard cap. Splitting a 200-page PDF into 200 single-page files works in modern Chrome and Safari. For very large jobs the download manager may queue some files — using Download all triggers them sequentially.

Does splitting reduce PDF quality?

No. The pages are copied byte-for-byte into the new PDFs. Text remains selectable, images stay at full resolution, and embedded fonts are preserved. The only thing that changes is the page count.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

If the PDF has owner-level encryption only (the typical case), ToolChop loads and splits it normally. If it requires a user password to open, unlock it in your PDF reader first and save an unlocked copy.

Will bookmarks and form fields survive the split?

Page-level annotations, hyperlinks, and form fields are preserved in each resulting PDF. Top-level bookmark trees are not re-anchored — the split files do not carry the parent document's outline, since the outline references pages that may have been excluded.

Can I split a PDF in half (odd/even or first/second half)?

Yes. For a 100-page PDF, enter "1-50, 51-100" to split it in half. For odd/even, single-page mode is the easiest — split every page, then merge the ones you want using the Merge PDF tool.

Why use ToolChop instead of iLovePDF or Smallpdf?

Both upload your PDF to a server. For confidential documents — contracts, payslips, medical records, ID scans — that is an unnecessary risk. ToolChop runs the split entirely in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

Can I split a PDF on a phone or tablet?

Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works in iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and other mobile browsers. Tap to pick a PDF from Files, iCloud Drive, or Google Drive.

Is there a file size limit?

Only your browser's memory. We have split 200 MB scanned PDFs without issue. For multi-GB documents the load step may take 30+ seconds because all bytes are held in RAM.

How do I split a PDF every N pages (e.g. every 10)?

Type the ranges by hand: "1-10, 11-20, 21-30, ...". A presets menu is on the roadmap. For now, single-page mode plus the Merge PDF tool covers any custom grouping you need.
